Children's Ministries

Promiseland
WHO: Kids in Kindergarten to 5th grade
WHEN: Wednesday nights at 7 PM (Sept. thru May)
WHERE: Community Wesleyan Church
WHY: Because it's Fun!!

What is Promiseland, and what makes it different from other kids programs?
Promiseland is just full of energy! As kids are arriving, there’s a game-time that changes from week to week – you’ll find some kids shooting hoops, while another group might be playing Twister, and still other kids are trying their hand at Perfection or checkers.

When game time winds down, kids in Kindergarten through second grade head to one area for a Bible drama and song time geared just to their age level. Third through Fifth graders go to their area for Bible learning as well. And you never know what form the Bible lesson may take – could be anything from Drama, to a “game show” style format to audience participation.

The kids then meet with smaller groups of 4 to 8 kids to follow up the lesson with some hands-on learning – and help them figure out how they can apply what they learned in their everyday lives.

What kind of material is covered in the Promiseland program?
The focus of Promiseland curriculum is to help kids learn about and understand the Bible – and how to use the lessons the Bible teaches in their everyday lives. Promiseland shows kids how the different parts of the Bible fit together, and they learn that each individual person has a place in God’s story as well.

Because the kids are split into age groups, we strive to make the material something each child can understand.

Kids also get a memory verse each week, as well as other materials they can bring home and share with their families and continue to use throughout the week.

Countless adults participate in the Promiseland program as drama leaders, small group leaders, game time coordinators, song leaders and more. And each one of these adults is working to get to know the children better and show them God’s love each week at Promiseland.

Missions
Missionaries Our Church Supports:

Jerry and Judy Manwaring

After serving one term in Haiti working with the Theological Education by Extension program, Jerry and Jody Manwaring relocated to Zambia in 1997. Jerry served as business manager and acting mission director, and Jody managed the mission guesthouse.

Jerry has earned three degrees from the State University of New York: an A.A.S. in agriculture, a B.P.S. in criminal justice, and an M.S. in management. He is currently working on an M.A. in ministry at Indiana Wesleyan University.

In 1998 Jerry led a work team to Fortaleza, Brazil. The trip was only for 10 day, but according to Jerry, “it resulted in a change of direction and commitment in my life.”

Jody said that as a result of her experience in Brazil, she also gained a new perspective on life and a new worldwide vision. “We want to live in such a way as to live out our life verse, ‘shining like stars in the universe’ as we ‘hold out the word of life’ whether in the United Stated or around the world.”

The Manwarings are from the Central New York District. They have three grown children and one grandchild.

“. . . shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life . . .” (Philippians 2:15b-16a).

Chris And Melissa George

Mike, Cindy and Melody Helvie

Since 1994 Mike and Cindy Helvie have ministered as Global Partners' career missionaries to South Africa where they served in church leadership development.  In 2005 they were reassigned to Albania where they will continue their missionary ministry.

Mike was born and raised in Logansport, Indiana.  He earned a B.S. degree in Christian Ministries from Indiana Wesleyan University.  Cindy (Mortier) was born in Seattle, Washington, and raised in Eugene, Oregon.  She earned a B.S. degree in nursing from Indiana Wesleyan University.  They both earned M.A. degrees in counseling from Western Evangelical Seminary.

At age 19 Mike sensed a call to missions, and Cindy felt her call to missions when she was 11.  Mike and Cindy met at college, and together they felt a call to missions.  They served in South Africa from 1992-1993 with the Wesleyan Gospel Corps.

Their vision for missionary service is to help people lead healthy lives and become whole so they may enable themselves, their families, and their churchs to experience and respond to God's Grace.

Carol Earl

Carol Earl was born in New York and raised in Colombia, South America, where her parents were Wesleyan missionaries. After graduating from high school in Ecuador, she returned to the United States and earned a B.S. degree in nursing in 1982.

In May 1985 Carol left for her first term of missionary service to Sierra Leone where she served as a nurse. In 1988 she took a two-year leave-of-absence and earned a physician assistant degree. She returned to Sierra Leone in 1991 to serve at the Kamakwie Wesleyan Hospital, however, in 1995 she was unable to continue her medical ministry in Sierra Leone due to civil war. As a result, Carol responded to the call to go to the LaGonave Wesleyan Hospital in Haiti.

Carol has fulfilled two missionary terms in Haiti. During her last term of service, she served as the medical director and the personnel director at the hospital. Much of her time has been devoted to handing over responsibilities to the Haitian staff. Carol has completed a French language program. Her primary role in the next term of service in Haiti is to open and run the nursing school.

A Favorite Verse: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:1

Bethany Morse

Bethany Morse completed her two-year intern missionary term to Zambia in June 2003 and plans to return to Zambia as a career missionary nurse. While Bethany was in Zambia, Liz Anderson, career missionary nurse, served as her mentor. She served at the Zimba Mission Hospital where she worked in the pharmacy,
worked in the male and female wards, assisted with anesthesia, helped to host visiting work teams, assisted with mission business.

Bethany was born in Fulda, Germany, and was on the move much of the time. She became a Christian at a Continental concert after seeing Jesus in the lives of the singers. She realized what was missing in her life was Jesus. In high school she felt a call to missions while attending Chambers Camp. She considers Sayre, Pennsylvania, and the Athens Wesleyan Church home because it is where she grew in her Christian walk. In May 1999 she graduated from Roberts Wesleyan College  with a B.S. in nursing, and she was appointed to intern missionary service in November 1999.

In 1997 Bethany spent six weeks in Guatemala with Students International. While in Guatemala, she taught healthier lifestyles, worked with clinics and pharmacies in mountain villages, assisted in city hospitals, and showed the JESUS film. She spent ten days in a missions hospital in Dessilines, Haiti, in January 1999. Her time in Haiti included working on the maternity floor, helping at an orphanage, and community health nursing.

Bethany’s desire is to lead people to Christ by example. She wants to be able to demonstrate God’s love to others so that they may come to find life in Christ.

“I lift up my eyes to the hills – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:1-2).

Roger and Suzan Shanks

Roger and Suzan Shanks have been serving with Global Partners as GO-Net volunteer missionaries in the Czech Republic from January 2002- February 2004.  During this time Roger served as the work team coordinator and did maintenance and construction work.  Susan was the work team hostess and also served as an office worker, English teacher, and discipler.  In March 2004 they were appointed to serve as career missionaries in the Czech Republic.

Roger had always felt a need to be serving others, and Susan had always had a heart for Missions.  In 1985 they had the opportunity to go on a short-term mission trip to Puerto Rico.  This experience left a burning desire in Roger's heart to do construction-related work as a career missionary.  Susan told God she was willing to go wherever and whenever He led.  Fifteen years later their skills were needed in the Czech Republic, and they knew that God wanted them to serve Him there.

Roger and Susan have three married daughters.

"In the desert prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God"  (Isaiah 40:3 NIV)

Jim, Karen, Carissa and Benjamin Pickett

In November 1999nJim and Karen Pickett were appointed to Mozambique as missionaries after serving there for one year as GO-Net volunteer missionaries.  Jim is involved in leadership development and teaching in the Bible school.

Shortly before Jim's twelfth birthday, his family went to Brazil where they served for 13 years.  In his first semester of college Jim surrendered to the call of missions that he started as a young child.  In 1986 Jim graduated from United Wesleyan College earning a B.S. in pastoral ministry, Christian Education, and missions.  He received an M.A. in Christian education and missions from Asbury Theological Seminary in 1998.

Karen (Kent) was born in Papua New Guinea to Wesleyan missionaries, Chuck and Linda Kent.  During an alter call at Pace '86 , she committed herself to go anywhere the Lord called her.  In 1991 she earned a B.S. in Spanish and secondary education from Houghton College.  Karen has been involved in teaching ministries.

"I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business.  Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made know to you" (John 15:16 NIV)

Professional Development

This is your introduction to a new adventure in Christian Ministry!

Thanks for checking out our web site. If you are reading this, you have some interest in the Christian Education program at CWC. Perhaps you are a new teacher, maybe you are just thinking about becoming a teacher, or you may be an old hand just seeing what’s new.

Regardless of your starting point, our goal is to provide you with some necessary background information to help you to become a more effective teacher. Our goal is to give our teachers a standard “core” of information as a foundation to build upon. The information contained in this site is far from exhaustive. It is designed to augment, not replace, the classroom experience. Ideally, you will work with a mentor who will help you apply this information into the classroom setting.

Earlier subjects tend to build on the previous lessons, while later subjects are more “stand alone” lessons. Experienced teachers may find the early lessons unnecessary, since they cover some basic teaching theory. New teachers are encouraged to look over all the material.

Teaching Christian Ed can be intimidating to the newcomer. I can honestly say that it has been a tremendously rewarding experience for me. The old saying that “the teacher is the one that learns the most” has definitely applied. You can be sure that if God has called you to a teaching ministry, He will equip you for the task. The following lessons are a first step in that equipping process.

The Christian Ed department would love to hear any feedback you would like to share about this material. If additional information would be useful, we would like to know that also. We invite you to join hands with God to begin the adventure that is Christian Education.
